I got some feedback the other day from an online teacher who finished my course "Become an Online Teacher: Quick Start." Feedback is good because it highlights what YOU need! Ms. Sheila wrote:
"Dear Karen, your course is great and I am up and running. But, what I really needed was a handful of free apps I can use immediately with my students."
You know what? She is RIGHT! That is exactly what online teachers need! Her wish is my command. Here are the actual apps and tools (all free) that I use in my own personal courses.
1. Flipgrid
Flipgrid is an app that allows teachers to facilitate video discussions. The teacher creates prompts called topics, and students post video responses to the prompts and reply to each other's videos.
2. Jamboard
Google Jamboard is a digital whiteboard that allows for remote or in-person collaboration in a shared space.
Here is my free template, just because I want to empower online teachers like you!
Kahoot is an online game-based learning platform. It allows teachers to set up fun web-based learning for others. It's FREE and it already has millions of games ready for all online teachers!
Live binders are...well, online notebooks! You can add files, links, videos, etc. They can be organized by class, unit, lesson, etc. Don't have a learning management system? No problem! Set up your course in live binders!
Remind is a great app that ensures that students, teachers, and parents can communicate without the exchange of private information like phone numbers. With this application, teachers can send messages to parents and students alike of schedule changes, updates, reminders, and important questions. And students and parents can also do the same. The BEST part is that you can queue up your announcements to send before the term starts!
I hope you have enjoyed these 5 free apps and can benefit from them in your online classes. Don't forget that you can get a free e-Book here. And, of course, I have free online classes and webinars for teachers!
