Online Teaching Thankfulness

Updated: Nov 21, 2021

Hello! I am Karen Olson at I have been teaching from home (yes, in my pj's sometimes) for 19 years and I love it! I've been honing this craft over time and now our goal at is to help transform YOUR life. I hope that you have been following my blog posts such as "How to Handle Disruptive Students in the Online Classroom" and others.

But, today, I want to take a moment and express my thankfulness for the blessings that I have. Here are the top 4 things that came to mind.

#1: The Internet (of course!)

Starting online teaching was a dream in 2000. Look, I wanted to work from home! I wanted flexibility! But....the internet was barely stable and there were no learning management systems or Google Classrooms. So, I cobbled resources together for my online students. Looking back, it was a mess. No centralized location for anything, forget collaboration! So, first and foremost, I am thankful for the Internet and the great web 2.0 technologies that have made their appearance since then.

#2: Working from Home

I remember my colleagues saying that I was "crazy" and that you "can't teach from home", never mind foreign languages. They laughed while I dreamt. But, I needed to be home for health and family reasons. Fast forward to 2021 and I am doing (and have been doing) it for almost 20 years! I sometimes stay in my comfy clothes with a nice shirt, scarf, and makeup for Zoom sessions. Since working from home, I am healthier and happier. Gone are the days of working in a Petrie dish getting every flu and cold possible. (I swear that I used up all my sick days by Halloween back then!)

#3: Flexibility

Where do I start?! The flexibility of teaching online from home is something I am thankful for every day. I nap in between classes. Moving laundry along is something I just can't do teaching in brick-and-mortar. Occasionally, I go out to lunch with my husband. We have even taken RV trips to warmer weather while I continued to teach online. Can you even imagine? (Or dream....)

#4: YOU!

Finally, but most importantly, YOU! I am forever thankful that I am helping teachers like you transform their lives as I did. Training thousands of teachers through blogs, free resources, and online courses has been the mission of and we couldn't have done it without you.

So, have some turkey, spend time with your family, be healthy, and don't forget to dream! Head on over to Teach Online NOW! | Online Teacher Coach to enroll in courses that will also change YOUR life. On to cooking preparations...
